Is This Guy For Real?

Here's Jeff from Flipping Out

Here's Monkey, who supposedly loves acupuncture

Here are highlights of every weird event on last night's show.

You decide. Me? I think he's nuts.

After seeing the teasers last week and reading the NYTimes review I decided I was not going to watch this guy, because then I might have an unfulfilled urge to kill him. The Mrs., who loves Monk, made it through 45 minutes of this schmuck last night before she gave up in disgust, so I am glad I did not have the frustration of pre-homicidal rage to deal with.

Oh yeah, he's a whackadoodle. But, I actually enjoy his desire to put in the absolute best into his homes. After seeing so many "just barely good enough" flips, it's nice to see someone who's not putting Home Depot & Lowes products in million dollar homes and expecting top dollar for them. I put in a bid a couple of years ago to stage a nearly $2M antique home that was being flipped. The father and son flippers installed Lowes lighting and vinyl shutters, yet spent oodles on a kitchen so huge and out of scale that it looked like "Kitchen Stadium" or an operating theater. It was ridiculas for a genuine New England 300 year old antique that had the requisite small rooms, low ceilings and rambling floor plan. They ended up staging it themselves (too cheap to do it right) My estimated staging budget was maybe 1/4 of 1% of the asking price. The house sat on the market for nearly two years and eventually went for nearly half of the original asking price. And currently I'm doing a city brownstone triplex condo that was a flip. My clients paid top dollar, but we are now repairing the poor work done by the flipper.

So, while Jeff is definitely a crackpot and I certainly wouldn't want to work for him, it looks like he puts out a beautiful product and he truly cares to do it right.

I agree, Linda. Jeff's taste is superb. His nutcracker level is hitting the red side of orange, however.

Oh, and flippers ruined our once affordable neighborhood. They not only did shoddy work and sold the houses at inflated prices, but the houses took over a year to sell. Those that are still standing have had to come down in price; and yet our real estate taxes have gone through the roof.

LOL. He's quite a character. That's for sure. And I agree with Linda; it's great to see someone who's passionate about his work and produces amazing results.
