D-Day, the 6th of June, 1944

Sixty three years ago today, allied soldiers landed on the Normandy Beaches, starting the push that was to end World War II. The veterans who saw Saving Private Ryan said that Steven Spielberg captured the scene on Normandy Beach as they remember it. Some had flashbacks as they watched.
Each soldier wore 60 lbs. of equipment, and many sank in the ocean and drowned when the landing boats dropped them off in deep water. If you've seen the beaches in France, you understand how little protection these brave men had.

So few of these veterans survive. Seven years ago they were dying at the rate of 2,000 per day. I am sure the rate is even faster now. This site exhorts senior to capture their memories and share them before it is too late. You can read them here.

This Englishman survived Dunkirk and the Normandy Invasion.

Ahhh, someone else on my blogs-read list did a D-Day post. Kudos, Contessa!

My wife convinced my Father to do an oral history on his time during WW2 before they passed.

I play it twice a year to remember them both. VJ Day and Father's Day.
