Know why Scarlett Johannson is so fabulous ...?

Because she seems so comfortable in her own skin, so proud of her feminine body, and so voluptuously HEALTHY. She exudes a combination of glamor, sexiness, and wholesomeness that few women manage to achieve. Plus she's smart, self-supporting, and confident.

And she can act. Scarlett needs no drummed up drama to attract attention. She merely ... is. When you read my post tomorrow, you'll understand why I started out with her as an example. (No, I won't be talking about Lindsay Lohan.)

Even Isaac Mizrahi, who is surrounded by beautiful women every day, couldn't contain himself when Scarlett stepped onto the red carpet in this gown. He just had to check out her girls.

How fabulous is this look?

How sexy is this one?

She could be selling cow urine and no one would notice.
I can only say, Amen to you, sister. Keep on going on and doin' what you're doin'.

Fabulous Saturday

Dovima. Do they even make models like her any more?

I've showcased Suzy Parker and Lisa Fonssagrives on this blog, and every time I think I've found the height of fashion fabulosity, I discover another unique face and look of times past. Here then, are some photos of Dovima, nee Dorothy Horan, 1927-1990. She was among the highest paid models of her era and one of the first true super models (Hear that Janice?)

Fabulous Women

The women in these photos look beautiful, healthy and fit without the attenuated, anorexic bodies so popular today. I am being a realist and will grant that, with the exception of Queen Latifah, none of these women are above a size six. But none seem to be starving themselves either, and they certainly don't mind showing off their curves...

Scarlett Johannsen is so comfortable being a female that she oozes sexuality without even trying. I suspect she actually enjoys wiggling as she walks.

Wow is all I can say about Selma Hayak. Gorgeous, talented, and brains. What a trifecta.

Liv's weight has fluctuated, but she has settled into her womanly curves and they look splendid on her tall form. She looked downright broody after giving birth to her child, giving her a soft glow. She also took her time getting the weight off. Now that's something I can relate to.

Sophia Loren at the '99 Oscars at age 65. Her beauty secret is that she exercises a half hour every day. She still looks fabulous, but I could only find one recent head shot of her. Let's just say that when she appeared at the Oscars, she put every other woman to shame.

Maria Sharapova, Tennis

Perhaps it isn't fair to include professional athletes. These particular women couldn't have reached the top of their game by being anorexic. Fit, beautiful, muscular, and with the stamina of ten linebackers: Why aren't body types like these gracing the fashion pages?
Gabrielle Reece, Volley Ball

Pam Boteler and Hannah Menke, sprint canoers

Pam Boteler glammed up

I would kill to have Angela Bassett's buff arms (or kill myself in the process to achieve the same look.) Unlike Oprah, Queen Latifah seems comfortable in her own skin. She tried losing weight a few years back and had breast reduction surgery, but recently she's found a weight and look that work for her. She's never anything but fabulous looking.

Vanessa Williams looks even more beautiful almost a quarter of a century after winning the Miss America crown. All I can say is, "Girlfriend you are taking excellent care of your body!"

And the Coppertone Whitest Woman Award Goes To...

In 1994, I lay for an hour under an umbrella by the pool on top of a hotel in Colombo, Sri Lanka, my body slathered with 60 SFP sunblock lotion and my head covered with a wide brimmed hat. My pale Dutch skin aged a decade during that hour, and I’ve not sunbathed since. The spots that appeared on my arms and hands that day are still visible. And I count myself lucky for having thoroughly covered my face.

Some women are already aware of the dangers of ultra violet rays to their skin and I salute them. In fact, these three celebrities are so white they must glow in the dark. Thus, the Coppertone Whitest Woman Award goes to...

Nicole Kidman:Whitest woman bar none. She is notorious for always wearing sunblock, even on ordinary days.

It was a close contest, as you can see by the honorable mentions:

Bernadette Peters: She’s past fifty but looks at least two decades younger.

Julianne Moore: A pale redhead with freckles, I cannot imagine her with a tan.

Special recognition to the women of Iceland: For being as pale as the ice caps receding on their land.

These women must have taken heed from Brigitte Bardot, the once lovely French actress who was notorious for her love of the Mediterranean sun, and who slowly mummified in front of our eyes. To be fair, Brigitte must now be in her 70's. But compare her photo to Sophia Loren's (on this site) and there's no mistaking the difference in the way these two women have aged.

Closet Musings: Or What I Wear at the Office

Most days my favored mode of dress resembles Uli Herzner's, the runner up of Project Runway 3: no makeup, straight blond hair, and casual relaxed clothes. In fact, I look forward to casual Fridays, because this outfit echoes just what I would wear to work that day.

But there are times when I have to look spot on at the office and represent my company in front of the managers I oversee, or when I travel, which is frequently, or at meetings and conferences. I share Laura Bennett's philosophy: It is better to own a few good pieces than a lot of ill made clothes.

And then there's the problem of finding age-appropriate outfits. I am a tweenie: neither young nor old. However, I am not ready to join Pepto Bismol land. Here's an example of the sack suit that so many of my colleagues deem appropriate after they've had a few children. I don't want to look like my grandmother: I want to look like a vibrant woman who is at her peak of power and femininity, while maintaining a certain authoritative air.

I am also not thin, but neither am I too heavy, which puts me in limbo land as far
as the designers are concerned. And my budget is hugely limited. Which totally puts me in the dog house, since most suits within my budget make me look like a miniature man or a model out of the L.L. Bean Catalogue.

So what's a single girl on the prowl to do? Why, ask her gorgeously clad, perfectly coiffed, ultra smooth and sophisticated friend Marcie for advice. And here is what she said:

1. Look for fit and proportion. The suit on the left will always look dowdy. It just isn't proportioned for fabulousness. The suit on the right (which resembles a recent purchase I made at Marshall's for only $150) looks sexy without being cheap, and authoritative without being Victorian.

2. Look for excellent quality fabric. This suit will never cut it. Beside being blah in color, the fabric has no structure. I would be self-conscious about those puckers once I noticed them and the saggy design. This suit would probably hang in my closet after I'd worn it once.

3. Know what will make you feel good. This outfit is too young and would send out the wrong signals, besides which, it would accentuate my small hips and large waist. I'd be more concerned about my mid section than my monthly presentation. However, on some women and in some office situations, this ensemble would be entirely appropriate.

4. Know your colors! This suit has it all: fabric, fit, color (perfect for a blond with fair skin), and proportion. I would probably get a job if I wore this suit at an interview. And observe the cuffs. Nice touch.

5. Choose incredibly beautiful, well made fabrics. When I saw this vintage designer suit online, my mouth watered. The fabric is similar to something I bought recently. If I'd been able to purchase this suit under $300, I would have. Look at those contrasting cuffs and lapels and the length of the jacket, which would hide a host of figure flaws. Absolutely fabulous.

Homage to an Idol

When I was a young girl I did not appreciate Sophia Loren's beauty. I thought her too earthy, her lips too ful, her chin too small, and her hips too wide. She was too exotic for my pre-teen tastes, and I prefered the more generic and traditionally pretty actresses, someone like Monica Bellucci.

I was wrong. Sophia represents the epitome of womanhood. Her secret for remaining a natural beauty with minimal surgical enhancements? Daily exercise.

Totally Hot!

Still Smokin'

In her heyday during the 1960's she could even make fun of her sexy image. Here is a song she sang with Peter Sellers, purportedly her lover at the time, titled Boom-Biddy-Boom.

Why not Grace...?

I love Grace Kelly. Watching her breeze into James Stewart's apartment in Rear Window always takes my breath away. I wanted to emulate her perfectly modulated voice, graceful movements, and cool, sophisticated sexiness.

Those 50's dresses with their tight bodices and petticoated skirts--the perky hats and elegant gloves-- screamed femininity. And on her they looked perfect. In her heyday, Grace usually played the independent (albeit rich) working woman.

So why is she not mentioned these days as a fashion icon along with her contemporary, Audrey Hepburn?

After Grace married her prince, she committed the biggest fashion faux pax of them all. She allowed herself to become stodgy and matronly. Here's a comparison of Grace and Audrey in the 60's. Ever fashion forward, Audrey never stopped being fabulous. Towards the end of her life, Grace was wearing muumuus and turbans.

One fabulous woman

Laura Bennet, my favorite runner up from Project Runway 3, was interviewed by Jill Hudson Neal for the Washington Post on October 31. Here are two of my favorite Laura quotes from the article:

"I'm also into quality as opposed to quantity. I'd rather wear four dresses over and over again than to have ten dresses that aren't made as nicely and don't fit as well. Don't worry that someone's going to say, "Didn't you wear that last week?" Well, yeah, I did actually. What's the big deal?"

"I want to keep encouraging women to take the time to take care of themselves and spend a few extra minutes on themselves in the mornings and see if it doesn't benefit their families by boosting their own self-esteem and nourishing their own souls."
