Top Chef 3: The Final Three

Oh, my, talk about being blindsided! Dale not only won the elimination challenge, he kicked ass with the huckleberry/blackberry sauce for his elk. Not only is Dale going to the finals, but he outperformed Brian. That truly surprised me.

Casey's Elk looked awfully raw and the judges did not like her cauliflower puree, but she is going on. Her Quickfire Challenge win was well-deserved, and it placed her in a position of strength for the Elimination Challenges
Hung, our kitchen precisionist, talked the most eloquently about what it meant to be a chef. Let's hope he is able to rise to the occasion next week and put both heart and soul into the final challenge.

And that leads us to the other huge surprise: Three chefs will be competing in the finals. My oh my oh my. I couldn't have been more wrong in my previous post than if I tried. I was certain Dale would leave and that only two chefs would make it to the finale.

A Classically Wonderful Top Chef

Five Happy Cheftestants Remain

For the quickfire challenge, Sirio Maccione, the suave and talented owner of Le Cirque, got to decide if our cheftestants could prepare his restaurant's secret signature dish: a white sea bass wrapped in russet potato and on a bed of leeks.

The deans of the French Culinary Institute, with founder Dorothy Hamilton, chose the ingredients for the elimination challenge: The simple and classic ingredients of chicken, potato, and onion represent the ultimate culinary test. Combined, these deans represent 200 years of cooking talent.

Gail, who finally returned, was as feisty, opinionated, and fair as usual. She looked beautiful too. Congratulations on your engagement, Gail. You simply glowed.

Each cheftestant was given an opportunity to shine individually. They can give no excuses this time or blame a partner. After they created a dish from simple ingredients, all we had to do was sit back and listen to the judges' comments, which in this episode were fair and knowledgeable. In the image below, Andre Soltner discusses food with Tom Colicchio. Andre, the chef/owner of Lutece in New York City, was this week's guest judge. 'Nuff said.

After not much deliberation in either case, Hung won both the Quickfire and Elimination Challenges, but it's become quite evident that his biggest competition for the title of Top Chef will be Casey.

Brian coasted to the finals with a truly hideous looking dish that apparently tasted divine.

Dale made the final four by the skin of his teeth, while Sara was asked to leave for cooking raw chicken in the elimination challenge. In fact, her meat was raw in both challenges. She must have suffered from nerves, although it was painfully clear as the episode unfolded that she was performing beyond her abilities.

As for Dale, he summed this episode up best when he declared to the judges: "Cooking is love … and you definitely know that you got laid tonight."

Yes, dahling, tonight we all got laid. Thanks, Bravo, for a truly excellent show. This is what cooking is all about.

Next week's guest judge? Eric Rippert. Yum.

Broccolini Downfall

The subtleties were not lost on us, were they eager readers? C.J. was taped chattering like a magpie. He's never been to New York, our next cheftestant destination, and he stated he was looking forward to going there. He also said that he has yet to reach his potential. My poll sitting below overwhelmingly shows that we hoi polloi thought he should be booted off. Regardless of all the signs, I thought it was especially harsh that he never got to step foot in Manhattan. The broccolini did him in, and it did look terrible on the plate. It must have been awful for C.J. to hear he made the single worst dish in the history of Top Chef.

However, his farewell was classy, and I will miss him.

As for Casey, she had a sterling night, winning the elimination challenge two weeks in a row. There's hope for all of us: One doesn't need good kniving skills in order to make top chef. Congratulations, Casey!

Top Chef 3: Much Ado About Nothing

OK, let me see if I've got this straight: C.J. won the quickfire challenge for creating a gourmet burger, but he won no immunity. Instead, he got to choose his team for the Restaurant Challenge. So he chooses Tre, Casey, and Brian. And his team loses.

But they don't really lose, because the other team doesn't win.

Wait, it gets better. Brian and Dale are called in by the judges because both their front house performances were piss poor. But wait. Neither gets sent home. Both are given a second chance, books for their teams, some pats on the back and asked to improve on this week's performances.
Winner: Bravo
Loser: The viewer

Top Chef 3: Quick, Get a Can of Raid: There’s a Buttwad in the Roach Coach!

The cheftestants, having used every ingredient known to man in their ice cream challenge, including cauliflower, got gussied up for an evening on the town. ‘Think I’ll apply some lipstick,’ thought Casey, laying the color on a bit thick, ‘and show off my cleavage. I’ll let my Casabas speak for themselves.’
‘My melons are just as ripe,’ thought Sara N. ‘I’ll let ‘em hang loose too.’

‘I’m comfortable with my cupcakes just as they are, thought Sara M smugly, choosing an outfit she could cook in.

All the men, except Dale, put on their best disco shirts in anticipation of their first opportunity to go trolling for chicks. In addition to his evening ablutions, Howie rolled antiperspirant on his forehead as a cautionary touch. In anticipation of his mano a mano dinner with Govind Armstrong, Dale donned his best high tide pants to show off his sexy hairy ankles.

Our cheftestants go off in the limo singing Bravo’s praises. “Hi ho, hi off, it’s off for fun we go!” Art deco Miami buildings whiz by them, and they are giddy with excitement until the limo comes to a screeching halt and regurgitates them in front of a waiting Padma and Govind. “Hee hee,” said a gleeful Padma. “Fooled you. You think Bravo, having put you in a luxury Penthouse intends to spend one more dime on you than they need to? You came to compete! We’ve provided you with two cramped Roach Coaches . It’s up to you to create a tasty and tasteful late night menu for bar drunks who have nothing but whacky whacky on their minds.

I know whacky whacky, thought Howie. I live in Miami, my ego is whacked, and I’m a control freak.

I know whacky whacky thought Hung. I am the living embodiment of it.

Those two are buttwads, thought CJ and Brian, we’re gonna coast through this one.

'I’m staying out of all this ego crap,' thought Tre. 'I’ll just keep under the radar and win this damn competition.'

'Sheeit,' thought Casey, thinking of her Casabas swinging in that small space. 'I feel exposed.'

'Dayum,' thought Sara N, 'I can’t cook in high heels. I can’t think with my cleavage showing. I feel like an idiot and I’m pissed.'

'Piece of cupcake,' thought an uperturbed Sara M, thinking of the cooking tasks at hand. 'Miami drunks can’t tell shit from shitola. All I need to do is create food they can swallow.'

The stage set for major DRAMA, the cheftestants draw knives for teams. Team Black consisted of Tre, Hung, Brian and Sara M. They were ready to rumble.

“You all stay inside those galleys and cook,” said Brian. “I’ll be in charge of the Congo Line on the Lido Deck.” “We’re not going on a Princess Cruise, dickhead,” said his teammates, but Brian had already donned his party hat and taken up his station outside of the Roach Coach. “Let him,” said Tre. “This will give us more room to create our bar food masterpieces.”

Team Orange, comprised of Howie, Casey, Sara N and CJ, knew it was in trouble when Howie’s forehead antiperspirant stopped working. “This is how teams work best,” the Bulldog said, sweat dripping off his nose. “I bark out orders. You cower, quiver, and quaver. Capiche?”
‘Up yours,’ A*Hole, C.J. thought.’ I’m gonna coast under the radar just like Tre.’

‘I’ll just ignore him,’ thought Casey, ‘and pretend he doesn’t exist.’

Sara N. had a different idea. ‘I can’t think in my party clothes. So I’ll do exactly what he says and let him take the fall.’
Brian, who had set up us his raw bar, oversaw the Congo Line. All the drunks in Miami participated and though they didn’t know what the hell they were eating, including Tre’s bacon wrapped shrimp and grits, they ate every mouth full, washing their greasy food down with even more alcohol.
Howie and his team had mistakenly put a funeral tent in front of their Roach Coach, and only Tom, Ted, and Padma showed up. Tom, asked for a slider. As he waited in the peaceful, quiet atmosphere, he began to nod off, and just as he fell into a deep REM sleep, Sara N. handed him her specially made slider.
We cut away to the judges table with Tom, Padma, Ted, and Govind discussing the two teams. “I had a great nap at Team Orange’s Roach Coach,” Tom said. “I got my aerobic workout at Team Black’s place,” said Padma. “Brian’s a cool party guy,” agreed Ted. “Ya think Howie slipped a mickey in Sara N’s milkshake? She seemed a little out of it to me,” remarked Govind. “I think Howie bludgeoned his team with a stick,” said Ted. “Where was CJ all this time?” asked Padma. “Taking a snooze with me,” answered Tom.

On and on went the serious deliberation, but the judges agreed that the Black Team clearly won, and that Tre’s food was seriously delicious. Then they turned to Team Orange. “Call those losers in. Will ya, Tre?”

Howie barges in and offers Sara N up as a sacrifice: “Sara N is a baby. She’s gotta go.”
Sara N. “That’s a really cruel thing to say. In fact, you’re more of an asshole every day.”
The judges: “You’re both responsible for this team losing. Howie, you ARE an asshole and we wish we could tell you to pack up your knives and go. But Sara N. you’ve got to learn to cook in your underwear if that’s the price Bravo ask you for staying in that nice Penthouse Apartment.”

“Screw you,” said Sara N.;
“That’s it, you’re gone,” replied the judges.
“Well,” said Sara N leaving in a huff. “I think I was too nice; There’s really a fine line between being competitive and being an asshole. In fact, you folks deserve the buttwad you kept.”

Next week the remaining cheftestants will compete against each other in the restaurant competition. Will The Buttwad survive to butt heads another day? Will Casey get over having cooked with her cleavage showing? Will Tre lord it over the others? Stay tuned.

Boo Hoo Hoo, Joey's Gone From Top Chef 3

"It feels like thunder's coming", thinks a prescient Joey, wondering how much longer he will last in Top Chef 3.

Our Joey was right. Rocco Di Spirito (and the rest of our merry judging gang) booted him for cooking lousy Italian food that had to be frozen then recooked in 10 minutes. Hung, Joey's partner, got, well, hung up in the details. He was unable to convince Joey, who had forgotten to put on his hearing aid, to freeze the pasta and sauce and ingredients in separate packages. The following day our losing team served a sloppy mushy mess and gagged their diners with a spoon.

Joey's reaction to being booted was, er, sad. Embarassing. Awfully wet. Maudlin. You pick the word.

"But I wanted him to send his mother and sister to Italy", said this Italian man. Boo hoo hoo. "Oh, gawd, now you're making me cry too", said another burly viewer.

We all feel for you, dahling. You were so close to receiving the brass ring. In honor of Joey, here is Roy Orbison singing his hit, Crying.

The two winners, Tre and CJ, were too busy hugging and dancing to notice Joey's distress or Roy's music. They've won two tickets a piece to go to Italy, as well as the whole enchilada, strike that, pasta. Congrats you two winners. And stop hugging. This love fest is getting to be embarrassing.

As an aside, there's a lovely discussion going on about Howie on the TC gals site. I, er, might have joined in about four times.

Top Chef 3: It's Hung Being Hung, But Howie Won

Our sensitive Joey felt his head was up his ass.

Congratulations for winning the Quickfire Challenge with your outstanding Trio of Tarts.

But it was Pippi Lia Stocking's time to go. She chose to use mushy polenta instead of a tortilla for a Latino dish. Big mistake.

Bye Dahling!

Biggest surprise of the night? Joey and Howie making up and hugging big tough male style.

Who does Howie remind you of?

Thanking his new buddy, Howie presented Joey with the bottle of wine he received from guest judge Maria Frumkin.

Ahwww!! Aren't they sweet?

Top Chef 3: Teaming Building Exorcists

Another beautiful morning dawns for our cheftestants
The ladies first bathe
Then apply their makeup
Casey practices yoga while preparing breakfast

Then the chefs tumble in to work.

After the Quickfire Challenge, which Casey won, our lush-ious Padma couldn't leave well enough alone. She just had to have another taste of that nice drink from Bombay.

She might have had one too many, for she accidentally introduced The Chaîne des Rôtisseurs as men in chains. Shit, Tom thought. I shoulda brought my Mr. T set. I woulda fit right in.

Wonder if my new pin would look too gaudy with that cute chain, thought Padma, imagining herself wearing the outfit and wondering where she could get a nice rack like that.

The chefs had to sort into teams of three. After a group hug, they couldn't decide, so they ...

kick boxed and ...
cat fought their way onto their teams.

Wouldn't you know, thought Casey, still recovering from having half her hair pulled out. I get stuck with the numnut twins. Well I have immunity. I can sit and relax. I'll just leave my tuna raw.
Like hell you will, Casey. You do as I say and say as I do then do as I do. Capiche?
Er, like, naw!

Joey's Theme Song arrived in time for his next tantrum. Click here and listen, as viewing the clip just won't make sense.
You think you've got it bad, you big baby, what about my situation? Camille thought. I'm stuck making a dessert out of pineapples and no one on my team knows my name.

So this is what you do, y'all. Ya gotta get that prickly skin off. That's tough, man. Then you gotta slice it and dice it. That's all I know.

Whaddayamean that's all you know, Dale? You talked us into making dessert!

Hey, we're chefs. We're taking a risk here! So, don't give me no guff. Just open up a can of Dole, drain the juice, and stick it under a whole wheat muffin, Camille, and call it an upsidedownsicle. The judges will never taste the difference. They'll be too full by the time they get to dessert to even notice.

The judges were indeed full, loving the shrimp, liking the beef, hating the raw tuna, and wondering if Dole was supposed to get product placement on the show.

At the end, they voted Pippi Lia-stocking's poached shrimp best in show. So she won! But Lia felt a bit miffed. Trip to the Hamptons? WhereTF are my free cookbooks!

Then they called in the trichinosis gang and pineapple dudes, and told them they were bad, awful, pathetic, but that Casey's was the worst so she had to go.

But I have immunity, she wailed. And I'm so sorry for letting everyone down. I shoulda done some work.

That's ok, said Padma, still feeling the sweet effects of that nice drink from Bombay. No one knows what what's her face's name is, we'll boot her off instead. Bye, who ever you are, pack up your knives and go!
If you'd bothered to even say boo, you would have liked me, really really liked me.

Yeah, well, too late now.
So long. Sayonara. Adios. Ciao. Tot siens! Ta ta. Bai Bai.

Ah, stuff it! I look nice in a bikini and you don't.
